The Bird Blind

Come experience a powerful Indigenous story where it began. Set in an Inupiaq village on Alaska’s Norton Sound, the play explores family, addiction, loss, and the unexpected bonds that help people find their way home. The Anchorage performances offer audiences a special opportunity to experience the work in a staged-reading format and to hear a story deeply rooted in the people, landscape, and communities that inspired it. Directed by Rhiana Yazzie, founder and artistic director of New Native Theatre, The Bird Blind marks Kira Apaachuaq Eckenweiler’s playwriting debut. An Inupiaq playwright from Unalakleet, Alaska, Eckenweiler draws deeply from her community, culture, and experience.
