Every Sunday evening from 6 to 8:30 pm, a small wood-paneled room inside the Los Angeles Athletic Club fills with a few dozen leather chairs, a handful of tables, and musicians who have played behind Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Marvin Gaye. The cover charge to get in is $10, paid at the door.
