The Final Note of a Decade

On the last Saturday of August, a Bob Seger tribute band and a 65-piece orchestra join forces to close out the 10th anniversary season of Castle Rock's Summer Concert Series.

The Final Note of a Decade

On the last Saturday of August 2026, the lights will go down over the Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park, and a decade of Castle Rock summers will come to a close with a sound the town has never quite heard before. When Still the Same, Colorado's premier Bob Seger tribute band, shares the stage with the 65-plus musicians of the Denver Pops Orchestra, the finale of the Summer Concert Series' 10th anniversary season will pair the grit of heartland rock with the sweep of a full symphony — a one-night-only collaboration that organizers hope will be the perfect way to turn the page on summer.

The concert, set for Saturday, August 29 at 8 p.m. with gates opening at 7, is the fifth and final show of a milestone season that has also brought the Marshall Tucker Band, Jackson Dean, Fitz and The Tantrums, and Cheap Trick to the intimate outdoor venue tucked into the foothills south of Denver. But this closing night is different from the rest. Rather than a single headliner, it is a dual performance — a tribute band and an orchestra, two very different musical traditions meeting in the middle of a Seger songbook that has soundtracked American life for more than half a century.

The band at the center of it all is Still the Same, a Colorado outfit led by frontman Glenn Vigil, whose rough-edged, bluesy voice is meant to evoke the Detroit rocker himself. Vigil is joined by a lineup of respected veterans of the Colorado music circuit — guitarist Chris Hambre, bassist Kevin Berry, keyboardist Wayne Lajoie, saxophonist Mark Strivings, vocalist Michele Steele, and drummer Don Kalil — a group that has filled venues across the state, from Boot Barn Hall to the Oriental Theater, with faithful, high-energy renditions of Seger's catalog. Their set list reads like a greatest-hits jukebox: Night Moves, Against the Wind, Turn the Page, Mainstreet, Hollywood Nights, and the bedrock anthem Old Time Rock and Roll, alongside deeper cuts like Katmandu, Her Strut, and Ramblin' Gamblin' Man.

The songs themselves carry a weight that makes the tribute more than mere imitation. Over six decades, Bob Seger and his backing bands, including the legendary Silver Bullet Band, landed 31 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold more than 75 million records worldwide. He was inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and his music — rooted in the working-class soul of Detroit — became the soundtrack of road trips, high school dances, and long nights for generations of Americans. To hear those songs played under the open Colorado sky, with strings and horns filling out the arrangements, is to hear them in a new dimension.

That symphonic dimension comes from the Denver Pops Orchestra, a community-based nonprofit that has been part of the metro Denver music scene for over 40 years. Its more than 65 members volunteer their time and talents, representing a wide range of ages and vocations, and the ensemble performs everything from light classical and operatic movements to Broadway, movie, and dance-band favorites. Under the baton of music director Ron Argotsinger, the Pops have built a reputation for making orchestral music accessible and joyful. For this collaboration, they will transform Seger's familiar tunes with sweeping arrangements, adding the power of a live orchestra to the band's bar-band energy.

The pairing is a fitting capstone for a venue that has become one of the most sought-after live music destinations along the Front Range. The Summer Concert Series itself has grown into a signature part of Castle Rock summers. Over the past decade, it has hosted dozens of Grammy-nominated and world-famous artists, and the town has leaned into the milestone season with extra celebratory touches.

For the finale, the town is promising a night made for singing along and swaying under the stars. Seating options range from elevated patio boxes with cocktail service to tiered orchestra seating and the general admission lawn. The concert runs until about 10:30 p.m., a long, unhurried close to a season that has been building toward this moment all summer.

There is something fitting about ending a decade of concerts with a tribute to an artist whose music is itself about memory and the passage of time. Turn the Page, Against the Wind, Night Moves — these are songs about looking back, about the roads traveled and the years gone by. As the Denver Pops Orchestra swells behind Still the Same on the final night of the series' tenth season, the audience at Philip S. Miller Park will be doing exactly what the music asks: savoring the moment, and turning the page on another Castle Rock summer.
