Boneheads Haunted House in

Most haunted houses ask one thing of you: keep walking and scream on cue. Boneheads Hilarious Haunted House asks something stranger. It wants you to talk back.

The attraction, which closes out its 2026 season on Halloween night at the University of Bridgeport, is billed as a room-to-room walk-through in which the scares come with jokes attached. Immersive rooms are staffed by eccentric characters who interact with guests as they pass through, so the experience depends as much on what visitors say as on what jumps out at them. The organizers describe it as part haunted house, part live comedy, and completely unpredictable, with a tagline that sums up the pitch: come for the screams, stay for the laughs.

That format is the whole point. Traditional haunts are built on surprise and darkness, with the audience cast as prey. Boneheads inverts the contract. The performers are there to be funny as well as frightening, and guests who freeze, crack a joke or sass back become part of the show rather than spectators to it. It is a haunted house designed for people who find pure terror a little one-note, and for the friends in every group who cope with fear by making wisecracks.

For anyone who wants more than the walk-through, the attraction sells a VIP ticket that bundles in an optional escape room, adding a puzzle-solving layer to the evening. General admission is $25 plus service fees; the VIP admission that includes the escape room is $35 plus fees. A portion of every ticket, $5, goes to the University of Bridgeport, an arrangement that ties the production to the campus hosting it.

The run itself is a short one. In 2026 the house opened on Friday, Oct. 16, and operated on weekend nights only: Oct. 16 and 17, Oct. 23 and 24, and Oct. 30 and 31, each night from 7 p.m. until midnight. That makes Halloween itself, a Saturday, the final performance, and the one the calendar points to for anyone who has put off the decision until the last possible evening.

The setting is part of the appeal. The address, 174 University Ave., places the haunt on the University of Bridgeport's campus in Bridgeport. Campus buildings make natural haunts: long corridors, odd stairwells, rooms that can be dressed up and blacked out in a matter of days. The production has also been recruiting its cast locally. A 2026 job posting for performers listed the venue as Carstensen Hall on the university campus and offered $25 an hour, with hires brought on as W2 seasonal employees, which suggests a professionally run operation rather than a volunteer garage affair.

That staffing detail is a useful clue to what the show is like inside. Paid, auditioned scare actors who are asked to be energetic, funny and reliable are being hired to improvise, not merely to lunge from behind a curtain. The comedy in the title is not a marketing flourish; it is a job requirement.

Boneheads is also one of the newer entries in a Connecticut Halloween landscape that is already crowded. The state's better-known attractions lean hard into dread: Fright Haven in Stratford, which fills more than 20,000 square feet indoors with two themed walk-throughs, and Legends of Fear at Fairview Tree Farm in Shelton, which marked its 30th season with a hayride and a wooded trail. Against that field, a haunt that openly advertises laughs stands out, and it slots neatly into a city that has its own share of atmospheric history.

Bridgeport, after all, is a city with a reputation for the uncanny. More to the point for October, it is a port city of old theaters, industrial ruins and shoreline fog, the kind of place where a haunted house on a college campus feels less like a novelty and more like local folklore in the making.

For the 2026 finale, the practical details are simple. The doors open at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, and the house runs until midnight. Tickets are sold in advance, with general admission at $25 and the escape-room-inclusive VIP at $35, both plus fees. Because the format is walk-up and open-house style rather than a fixed showtime, guests move through at their own pace, which means the last night of the season is likely to draw the longest lines of the run.

What awaits inside is deliberately hard to describe, and that appears to be the intention. The rooms are immersive, the characters are eccentric, and the scares are punctuated by punchlines. Whether a visitor leaves hoarse from screaming or from laughing depends, in part, on how willing they are to play along. On Halloween night in Bridgeport, that is the whole invitation.
