Bronco Bash Tailgate at Boise State

Boise State's Alumni Association throws a free, family-friendly Halloween tailgate at the Alumni and Friends Center on Oct. 31, 2026, three hours before the Broncos host Texas State across the street at Albertsons Stadium.

Bronco Bash Tailgate at Boise State

On Halloween afternoon, the stretch of University Drive across from Albertsons Stadium will fill with food trucks, music and photo backdrops long before the Broncos take the field. The Boise State Alumni Association's Bronco Bash runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, at the Alumni and Friends Center, 1173 W. University Drive, with the game against Texas State kicking off three hours after the party starts.

The event is free and open to everyone, not just dues-paying alumni. The Alumni Association asks guests to RSVP in advance, and anyone who registers by Oct. 27 is entered into a drawing for a football autographed by head coach Spencer Danielson. The afternoon's lineup is built for a crowd that arrives in mixed company: food trucks, live music, photo ops, activities aimed at kids, and free game-day swag.

Bronco Bash is not a one-off. The Alumni Association runs a tailgate before every home game and at select away games, part of a broader effort to turn game day into a standing invitation rather than a ticketed perk. The home-game version is deliberately unbounded, with no ticket requirement and no capacity limit, which makes it one of the few places on a Boise State football Saturday where a family can walk up without a plan.

The setting itself carries some history. The Alumni and Friends Center opened in 2016, a 44,000-square-foot building designed by LCA Architects and built by Jordan Wilcomb Construction. Ground broke on Sept. 20, 2014, and the university cut the ribbon during Homecoming on Oct. 15, 2016. The $14.5 million project was funded primarily by private donors, with additional university financing from U.S. Bank and the Idaho Housing and Finance Association, and it was made possible through the vision and generosity of Allen '74 and Dixie Dykman. The building runs on Boise's geothermal system, and its clock tower glows with customizable LED lights that often burn blue and orange on game weekends. Inside hangs work by alumni, faculty and friends, including Alma Gomez-Frith '91, Ward Hooper '87, John Killmaster, Ben Victor and Michael Woods '72.

Across the street, the stadium supplies the atmosphere the tailgate is trading on. Boise State's field, officially Lyle Smith Field at Albertsons Stadium, has been blue since 1986, when then-athletic director Gene Bleymaier decided a replacement for the stadium's worn synthetic turf should be in school colors. The idea surfaced in a staff meeting, Bleymaier later told The Arbiter. On Sept. 13, 1986, Boise State unveiled the first non-green artificial football field in the world in front of 17,465 people and beat Humboldt State 74-0. Lyle Smith, the coach who led the program from 1947 to 1967, offered a verdict during the game: "I like it very much. It's innovative and very attractive. Besides that, the scoreboard looks good tonight."

The turf picked up nicknames over the decades, Smurf Turf, Bronco Bluegrass and Lake Lyle among them, and USA Today has named it the best attraction for sports fans three years running. The university now holds a federal trademark on the color blue as applied to artificial turf. The mystique took hold in earnest on Dec. 1, 1990, when No. 10 Boise State beat No. 1 Middle Tennessee 20-13 in an NCAA I-AA quarterfinal, the first time a top-ranked team fell in Boise.

This season's Halloween matchup arrives in a new era for the program. Boise State is competing in the relaunched Pac-12 in 2026, and Texas State, out of San Marcos, is a conference opponent rather than a one-off nonconference visitor. The Bobcats are coached by G.J. Kinne. The Broncos are led by Danielson, who became the 12th head coach in program history on Dec. 3, 2023, after a three-week stint as interim.

For the Alumni Association, the pitch is simpler than any of that history. The tailgate starts where the campus meets the neighborhood, three hours before kickoff, and the only thing organizers ask is that you tell them you're coming. On a night when much of Boise will be dressed for Halloween anyway, the walk from the Alumni and Friends Center to the stadium is short enough that the party and the game blur into one long evening.
