The Helens Take Over Owensboro

The Roper Romp returns to downtown Owensboro on October 2, 2026, sending a parade of caftan-clad Helen Ropers through local bars and shops to raise money for homeless animals.

The Helens Take Over Owensboro

On a Friday evening in early October, downtown Owensboro will fill with a sight that would have delighted — and probably baffled — the residents of Santa Monica. Dozens of people in floor-length caftans, curly red wigs, and chunky 1970s jewelry will parade through the streets, stopping at bars and shops, hunting for hidden rubber ducks, and competing for trophies. They are dressing as Helen Roper, the loopy landlady from the sitcom Three's Company, and they are doing it to help rescue animals.

The event is the Roper Romp, returning for its second year on October 2, 2026. Early check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. at the RiverPark Center's Pop-Up Bar, with the official kickoff at 6 p.m. A parade lineup is set for 8:15 p.m. and an awards ceremony for 8:30 p.m., followed by a "Regal Beagle" after-party at The Pub on Second — the downtown bar rebranded for the night as the fictional tavern where Jack, Janet, and Chrissy hung out on the show. Proceeds go to SparKY Rescue, also known as Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky, a nonprofit based in Owensboro.

The premise is as simple as it is silly: dress as Helen Roper, or as Stanley, Jack, Janet, Chrissy, or any other Three's Company character, and spend the evening romping through downtown. Pets are welcome in costume too. Along the way, participants work a "Roper Romp Bingo Map," visiting participating restaurants, shops, and other locations and completing activities for prize chances. Twelve "Hidden Helen" rubber ducks are stashed among the same stops. Awards go to the best Helen Roper costume, the best pet Helen Roper or Three's Company costume, and the best Three's Company group costume, with drawings for the overall bingo winner and the duck hunt.

What makes the Owensboro romp more than a novelty is the character at its center. Helen Roper, played by Audra Lindley, was a figure in the early seasons of Three's Company. She was the wife of Stanley Roper, the landlord of the apartment building where the show's young roommates lived. The Ropers were popular enough to earn their own spin-off, The Ropers. Lindley died in 1997.

But something about Helen stuck. As the Cincinnati Magazine writer put it, she was a rare unconventional older female character on television, pre-dating The Golden Girls while delivering similar verve and humor — a bawdy freethinker who wanted more out of life and, notably, more in the bedroom. In the television family tree of frustrated suburban housewives, she is a forebear of characters like Peg Bundy.

That affection has since grown into a genuine national phenomenon. According to NPR, Mrs. Roper Romps began in 2013 as a parade in New Orleans during Southern Decadence, the city's large LGBTQ celebration. From there the idea spread to San Diego and then, organized largely through social media, to towns and cities across the country — West Seattle, North Little Rock, Front Royal, Topeka, Ypsilanti, and beyond. The New York Times took note in 2023 with a piece titled "At Mrs. Roper Romps, the Caftan Is Queen." The gatherings are typically groups of Gen X women, resplendent in colorful caftans and red curly wigs, paying homage to a character they loved. The caftan itself — once just a satin housedress in loud patterns — has enjoyed a fashion resurgence in the years since, showing up in designers' collections and on TikTok.

Owensboro's version began more modestly. The inaugural event, billed as the Mrs. Roper Romp Downtown Crawl, was held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, kicking off at 5 p.m. at the RiverPark Center, with registration in the Sound Garden Pop-Up Bar. Tickets were $24.57 — a wink at the show's 1977 debut — and the after-party at The Pub on Second became the Regal Beagle for the night. That first romp drew 52 people, according to the Messenger-Inquirer, half of them from out of town and eight from out of state. The money raised went to Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky.

"This geographic reach demonstrates that the event appeals not only to local residents, but also to visitors throughout the region, bringing people into downtown Owensboro to support Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky and local businesses," said Tanya Burdette, a SparKY spokeswoman. Organizers chose to return to the RiverPark Center pop-up bar because it worked so well the first time. "We have developed a strong partnership with their team," Burdette said. "They were excited to hear that we would be bringing the event back this year."

The 2026 edition adds a new feature: a Mrs. Roper Parade, which the event's own listing calls "new for 2026." Costume contests now include Best Mrs. Roper and Best Canine Roper. Organizers frame the whole thing around a straightforward mission. "Roper Romp is more than a costume event," they said. "It brings the community together to have fun, support local businesses, and help rescue animals. Every ticket helps provide care and second chances for animals in need."

That mission belongs to SparKY Rescue, a foster-based, no-kill organization founded by John and Bridget Austin. John serves as president and Bridget oversees daily operations. For most of its existence the rescue ran entirely on volunteers working out of their homes and cars; in recent years it purchased its first permanent headquarters, at 1004 East 18th Street in Owensboro, which will house offices, a donation drop-off point, adoption space, and event room. The building also supports a program called Sheltered Start, aimed at owners of pregnant dogs or recent litters who want to surrender the pups and have the mother spayed for free, ensuring no future litters. The rescue's stated goals include lowering euthanasia rates in area shelters, educating the public about spaying and neutering, and promoting adoption.

The Roper Romp is one of the ways it funds that work. Sponsors for 2026 include Larry Conder County Commissioner as title sponsor and Lelah Rogers for District Judge Division 1 as parade and trophy sponsor, along with Bell Bank Mortgage, Magnolia Mercantile, RiverPark Center, Rod Kuegel for Daviess County Judge-Executive, Owensboro Roofing Company, Paws and Claws, The Pub on Second, M Squared Marketing Company, Laser One, and Visit Owensboro.

There is something fitting about the pairing. Helen Roper was, in her way, a figure of second chances — a woman who refused to fade quietly into a boring marriage, who kept reaching for glamour and fun. The people who dress as her each year are doing much the same, and this time the second chances extend to the animals waiting in foster homes around Daviess County. On the first Friday of October, the streets of Owensboro will be full of caftans and red wigs, and every ticket sold will help pay for a spay, a surgery, or a kennel until a dog or cat finds a home.
