It is a Friday night in late August, and summer in Callaway, Maryland, is winding down. At a small restaurant on Point Lookout Road, though, the season is about to wind up. On the evening of August 28, from 7 to 10 PM, the dining room of El Coqui Restaurant becomes a dance floor for a free Latin dance night — one hour of cumbia instruction followed by two hours of social dancing, with salsa, bachata, merengue, and cumbia filling the air as the stars come out. No cover. No tickets. Just the food, the music, and the crowd.
The event is officially called "Under the Night Stars in Puerto Rico Latin Dance Night @ El Coqui," and it is the product of a father-and-daughter team and a DJ duo who have quietly reshaped the cultural landscape of Southern Maryland. On one side, there's the father-and-daughter team behind El Coqui LLC, which began in 2020 as a food truck at the height of the pandemic and has since grown into a brick-and-mortar restaurant at 21030 Point Lookout Road. On the other side are DJ Spinnit and Katrina, the duo behind Soundwavexperience, who have brought Latin dance nights to the region.
El Coqui's own story is a recent chapter in an older saga. The restaurant's website traces its origins to a family that has been in business for five and six generations, and its dream of a Puerto Rican destination in Southern Maryland came true under impossible circumstances: a global pandemic that nearly closed restaurant kitchens nationwide. The food truck launched in 2020, offering the island's classics, and today, the sit-down restaurant hosts not just Latin dance nights but also karaoke evenings and live Puerto Rican music.
Soundwavexperience has organized dance nights at El Coqui and La Vida Mexican Bar and Grill, and the lesson at 7 PM is a cumbia lesson, open to all levels. For newcomers to Latin dance, it's the perfect point of entry. At 8 PM, DJ Spinnit takes over, and the night moves into what the flyers call "Latin Social Dancing" — two hours of salsa, bachata, merengue, and more, spreading across the restaurant's indoor and outdoor spaces. On warm evenings, the event spreads outside, where the "stars" of the title show up in the actual night sky.
This particular edition of the dance night carries an extra beat of generosity. Attendees who bring canned food for dogs and cats — or food and milk for puppies and kittens — can donate to a local cause and receive 10 percent off their restaurant bill. It's a small detail, but it's part of Soundwavexperience's commitment to turning the dance floor into a force for good.
The story of this night is the story of how a rural county full of history has made room for a new kind of culture. It's the story of a food truck that survived the pandemic to become a sit-down restaurant, and of a DJ who, through music and dance, brought people together.
The night is free, the food is real, and the rhythm is generous. Bring your friends, your dancing shoes, your appetite, and your energy. The call is 410-231-6089 if you want to secure a table. The stars will be there — and, under them, a little piece of Puerto Rico, right on Point Lookout Road in Callaway.
