A Medieval Autumn in

On the first Saturday of September, the rolling fields of the Middlesex County 4-H Fairground in Westford, Massachusetts, will fill with knights, archers, fencers, dancers, and merchants in medieval garb for Falling Leaves, the annual gathering of the Barony of Carolingia. This year's edition, set for September 5, 2026, carries the full title of Falling Leaves and Baronial Archery and Thrown Weapons Championships, and it promises a day of tournaments, equestrian demonstrations, music, dancing, and crafts that has become a beloved ritual for the barony.

The SCA, a nonprofit educational organization devoted to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of the pre-17th-century world, has deep roots in eastern Massachusetts. The Barony of Carolingia, which hosts Falling Leaves, is part of the East Kingdom.

Falling Leaves has become the barony's signature autumn event, a day when the barony gathers at the fairgrounds to crown its champions and welcome newcomers. The event has evolved over the years, sometimes hosting the East Kingdom Equestrian Championships, as it did in 2025, and at other times serving as the stage for the barony's own martial competitions. The 2026 edition shifts focus to the archery and thrown weapons championships, with the barony's archers and throwers competing for the baronial titles.

The event takes place at the Middlesex County 4-H Fairground in Westford, a pastoral setting that offers space for equestrian rings, archery ranges, and tournament lists.

The 2026 program runs from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. The day includes archery and thrown weapons championships, with qualifiers and finals. Armored combatants will face a morning tournament built around a challenge format, followed by an afternoon of three-on-three melees, tavern brawling, and a 'Wheel of Pain' that pairs fighters with a rotating selection of weapons forms. Rapier fencers will take part in a three-on-three melee tournament, a round-robin singles tournament, and a 'live steel' experiment—stabbing ballistic gel, not humans, as the organizers are careful to note. Equestrian activities are also planned, with riders required to present current negative Coggins tests and interstate health certificates in advance.

There will be gentler pursuits as well. Youth activities are planned, and the schedule includes music and dancing. Merchants will line the grounds. One notable change this year: the joust, a highlight of recent Falling Leaves gatherings, will not take place. Organizers explained that, due to the age and injury of the horses—not the people—the jousting steeds are sitting out the season, with hopes of returning next year with the next generation of East Kingdom jousting horses.

The event is a dry site, with no alcohol permitted on the grounds, and there will be no dayboard or feast this year. Instead, attendees are encouraged to bring picnic lunches, with a light snack table provided. The day pauses around midday so everyone can share a meal together. Pets are welcome, though organizers ask that they be kept away from the equestrian rings, since horses spook easily.

Behind the tournaments and the pageantry lies the deeper purpose of the SCA: education through living history. Falling Leaves is as much about welcoming newcomers as it is about crowning champions. It is a philosophy that has defined Carolingia.

The fairgrounds sit at 55 South Chelmsford Road in Westford, reachable from I-495 via exit 83. As the organizers put it, come hang out with friends, tackle some targets, and check out what the SCA has to offer. For the Barony of Carolingia, Falling Leaves remains the perfect way to mark the turning of the season.
