Reading Between the Lines: The Story

In this series, we will step beyond the pages of the chosen book and explore the real life people, events, and ideas that inspired the author to write and share their story with the world. Beginning as a self-published book that was released in 1901, The Tale of Peter Rabbit became an instant best seller and has become one of the top-selling children's books in history. With a great deal of tenacity, wit, and creativity, author Beatrix Potter blazed a trail for women in the literary world when she brought Peter Rabbit, the first-ever licensed literary character, to life in the pages of her stories.
