Beyond Pink Art Show at YWCA

For one night each October, the building at 59 Paul Robeson Place in Princeton stops looking like a community center and starts looking like a gallery. Walls go up. Labels get printed. Paintings, photographs, sculptures, and mixed-media pieces are hung by people who made them while navigating breast cancer treatment, recovery, or the long afterward. On Thursday, October 22, 2026, that transformation happens again for the ninth annual Beyond Pink Art Show, which opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. and continues as a pop-up gallery through Friday, October 23.

The opening night is the fundraiser: food and drinks, a silent auction, and a room full of artists, families, sponsors, and BCRC staff and volunteers. Tickets are sold through Humanitix at $100 for general admission, with the option to add a donation to the Breast Cancer Resource Center at checkout. The gallery itself is the point of the weekend, but the party is what pays for the rest of the year.

Beyond Pink benefits YWCA Princeton's Breast Cancer Resource Center, known around town as the BCRC. The center's services are free and year-round: support groups at several stages of diagnosis, including a weekly virtual drop-in called Coffee and Chat and a bimonthly evening group for people living with metastatic breast cancer; a boutique where survivors are fitted for wigs, mastectomy bras, and prosthetics in private rooms; and a rotating slate of wellness workshops on everything from yoga and meditation to lymphedema, acupuncture, healthy eating, and returning to work after treatment. The BCRC also does community outreach and education, with staff and volunteers sharing information about early detection and risk.

Many of the works in the show come out of the BCRC's Healing Arts Program, which gives participants a studio-like space to make things as part of their survivorship rather than as a break from it. That origin matters to how the gallery reads. These are not illustrations of illness made by outsiders. They are the survivors' own accounts, in whatever medium the maker chose, and the show's organizers describe each piece as reflecting the emotional journey of living with or beyond breast cancer, carrying vulnerability, empowerment, and resilience in equal measure. The gallery has always welcomed poetry alongside painting, and caregivers are represented too, not just patients.

The event has grown up in public. By 2021 it was held virtually because of the pandemic, with much of the work coming from Healing Arts participants. In 2023 it was the sixth annual show. The 2024 edition ran four days, October 24 through 27, and the 2025 show was held at MarketFair from October 23 to 26 with an opening reception. For 2026 the show moves back to the YWCA's own building, which changes the feel of the thing: the art hangs in the same place the support groups meet and the wig fittings happen. The distance between the gallery and the services it funds drops to zero.

That proximity is part of the argument the event makes. Beyond Pink is billed as more than an exhibition, a celebration of strength, creativity, and community that also gives the public a way into the YWCA's broader mission of empowering women and eliminating racism. Sponsorships and art sales underwrite the support groups, the wellness programming, the boutique fittings, and the educational outreach. Local businesses have gotten involved in other ways over the years, from hosting fundraisers to supporting the show directly.

The BCRC itself has been a Princeton fixture for decades. Its founding premise has not changed: that a diagnosis is easier to carry with information, practical help, and other people who have been there. What has changed is how visible that community has become. Beyond Pink puts the evidence on the walls.

For anyone who has never been, the format is simple. Opening night on Thursday, October 22 is the ticketed reception, running 6 to 9 p.m. at YWCA Princeton, 59 Paul Robeson Place. The gallery continues the following day, Friday, October 23, so the artwork can be seen by people who could not make the party. Tickets and donations are handled through the Humanitix listing linked from the YWCA's Beyond Pink page, and the YWCA advises checking details close to the date, since hours and pricing can shift.

What a visitor takes away tends to be less about any single canvas than about the accumulation: dozens of works, each one a record of a particular person's year or decade, hung together in a building where the practical help happens. The silent auction ends, the food runs out, the walls come down on Friday night. The programs the show pays for keep running through the winter.
