Country Camp Comes to the Duke

The Season 18 fan favorite brings her Peg Bundy hair and Midwestern charm to Albuquerque's Effex NightClub for a night of drag, community, and homecoming.

Country Camp Comes to the Duke

On the night of Friday, September 11, 2026, the main room of Effex NightClub in downtown Albuquerque will fill with the particular kind of electricity that only a freshly minted Drag Race fan favorite can generate. Doors open at nine, the meet-and-greet begins at half past ten, and by 11:30 the lights will drop on a stage that has, over the past several years, become a regular landing pad for some of the biggest names in American drag. The headliner this time is Darlene Mitchell, the country-camp queen from RuPaul's Drag Race Season 18, and the occasion is another installment of Fierce Fridays, the long-running series that Marcos Jay Events has used to bring reality-television royalty to the Land of Enchantment.

For anyone who followed Season 18, Darlene Mitchell needs little introduction. She arrived on the show in January 2026 as a self-described blend of soap-opera glamour and Midwestern trailer-trash panache, crowned by a signature Peg Bundy bouffant. She was, by her own telling, a reluctant returnee to the stage: a queen with ten years of drag under her belt but a five-year hiatus from the performance circuit, she had once performed under the name Trash before stepping away. The question she posed to the competition was whether RuPaul and the main stage could coax her back out of her bedroom once more. By the time the season ended, the answer was emphatic.

Darlene is a Los Angeles-based queen who originally hails from Greentown, Indiana. Her drag, as described by MTV and World of Wonder, blends soap-opera glamour with Midwestern trailer-trash panache, embracing the country camp that makes her stand out on the main stage.

That blend carried her deep into Season 18. She competed through the spring and reached the grand finale on April 17, 2026, where the season's final episode aired. It was a run that captured everything fans loved about her: the humor, the warmth, the refusal to take herself too seriously.

Now she brings that energy to Albuquerque, where the Fierce Fridays series has become something of a tradition. Presented by Marcos Jay Events, the series has been a reliable pipeline for Drag Race talent to reach the Duke City. Earlier this year, Nini Coco headlined a Fierce Friday in July, and Darlene's September appearance continues that streak, bringing another fan favorite to the same stage.

The venue hosting all of this is itself a landmark of Albuquerque nightlife. Effex NightClub, at 420 Central Avenue Southwest, was established around 2011 by owner Carri Phillis and helped pioneer the city's modern nightlife, widely recognized as one of Albuquerque's first true "big city" gay nightclubs. Housed in a repurposed downtown building, it spans three floors — a main dance room, an upper lounge, and an open-air rooftop patio — each with its own DJ booth and bar. Its industrial-chic interior, high ceilings, and pulsing lights give it an electric, urban vibe that sets it apart from smaller local bars, and it has become a centerpiece of the downtown entertainment district, drawing mixed crowds of LGBTQ+ patrons and allies alike. Phillis has said that opening Effex downtown was "the best decision" for the community, a reflection of the club's role in energizing the city's night scene.

For the September 11 show, Darlene will be in good company. The night is hosted by Vanessa Patricks, a familiar face in Albuquerque drag, with performances from a roster of local talent including Sunny Marmalawd, Sherri Moan, Illianix D Martinlex, Ava Schmava, and Kayla Chingada, all backed by beats from DJ Spunjy. It's a format that has served Fierce Fridays well: a showcase of the city's own queens alongside a national headliner, a reminder that the local scene is as much the star as the visiting celebrity. General admission runs $15, with a $23 meet-and-greet add-on for fans who want a photo and a moment with Darlene before the show. The night is strictly 21 and over, and the main room will be the place to be.

There's something fitting about Darlene Mitchell headlining a night like this. Her whole story is about coming back to a stage she thought she'd left behind, and finding that the audience still wanted her there. Fierce Fridays has spent years proving the same thing about Albuquerque: that the city will show up, night after night, for the queens who make it feel like a big city. On a September night in the Duke City, with the rooftop open and the main room buzzing, Darlene Mitchell will get the chance to do what she does best — be exactly who she is and remind everyone why they fell in love with her in the first place.
