Valhalla on a Mat: Viking

Drekker Brewing and Yuj Yoga have teamed up for a Saturday-morning yoga class that trades namaste for Norse myth—loud music, high-fives, and hammer-swinging warrior poses on a brewery patio.

Valhalla on a Mat: Viking

On Saturday mornings at the patio between Brewhalla and Drekker Brewing Company in Fargo, something strange and joyful happens. A crowd of yogis—many of them beginners, some of them veterans, all of them carrying their own mats—gathers. Loud music thumps. High-fives ring out. There is, in the organizers' own words, probably some swearing. And somewhere in the middle of it all, people sink into a deep warrior lunge and swing an imaginary hammer, channeling the power of Thor.

This is Viking Yoga, a recurring Saturday-morning experiment created by Drekker Brewing Company and Yuj Yoga. On August 29, 2026, the series returns to Brewhalla Market at 1702 1st Ave N for another session of what the tagline calls "Vinyasa, Valhalla-style"—a one-hour class that promises bold moves and big energy, with none of the hushed reverence you might expect from a traditional studio. The event's description captures the spirit. "You know yoga, right?" the organizers write. "Well, we gave it the Viking treatment." For fifteen dollars, guests bring their own mat and an open mind, then spend the hour kicking off their Saturday with what Brewhalla calls "Hair of the Downward-Facing Dog" and a "hammer-swinging warrior pose." The point is high-fives, loud music, sweat, and a celebration of what they call "viking prowess." When the hour ends, participants wander into the market for a bite and a beer.

The event springs from two local forces. Yuj Yoga, founded in 2022 by Allison Gonzalez, who has been teaching yoga in Fargo since 2019, was created with a mission to bring people together after the self-isolating years of the pandemic. The studio's philosophy is inclusive and open to every level, from restorative yin to sweaty hot yoga. Drekker Brewing, which operates Brewhalla, is known for its playful, loud atmosphere. When the two teamed up in June 2024 for the first Viking Yoga session, Brewhalla described the class as "something completely wild, weird and crazy fun." The vision was "funtensity"—intensity with fun—and a declaration that there are "no rules or expectations" in Viking Yoga. "Most importantly," the organizers say, "it's about celebrating your viking prowess."

The class has become a recurring summer series. In 2026, sessions run from July 25 through September 26, each starting at 10:00 a.m. on Brewhalla's North Terrace. At fifteen dollars a ticket—refundable up to seven days before the event—it's an affordable, offbeat Saturday ritual.

More than a gimmick, Viking Yoga is a marriage of two local institutions that love to blow past expectations. It takes the yoga union of body and breath and gives it the bold, loud spirit of a Viking hall. On those Saturday mornings, Fargo's answer to Valhalla isn't a distant Norse afterlife; it's a sunny patio with loud music, an imaginary hammer, and no one checking to see if you're doing it right. Bring your own mat, bring an open mind, and Skål to that.
