This month we will be discussing The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Susan Dominick will lead our discussion. A young man's quest for eternal youth and beauty ends in scandal, depravity and death. Enthralled by his own exquisite portrait, Dorian Gray exchanges his soul for eternal youth and beauty. Influenced by his friend Lord Henry Wotton, he is drawn into a corrupt double life, indulging his desires in secret while remaining a gentleman in the eyes of polite society. Only his portrait bears the traces of his decadence. The Picture of Dorian Gray was a succes de scandale. Early readers were shocked by its hints at unspeakable sins, and the book was later used as evidence against Wilde at his trial at the Old Bailey in 1895. Susan Dominick is a lifelong lover of books and a familiar face in Knoxville’s cultural community. She holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee College of Law, along with undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Business, also from UT. Susan has been a faithful and lifelong Knox County Library patron, visiting weekly to check out the latest must reads. For over two decades, Susan has volunteered at the Knoxville Museum of Art, beginning as a docent through the Junior League and now serving as a front desk mainstay; she was honored as KMA’s Volunteer of the Year in 2024. She is also an active member of the KMA Guild, KMA Book Club and a docent at Historic Westwood.
