Coca-Cola's Thirsty's Fan HQ Brings

For the Red Raiders' season opener at the newly renamed Galaxy Stadium, Coca-Cola's traveling fan headquarters sets up shop on Drive of Champions with free samples, trivia, and a visit from Danny Amendola.

Coca-Cola's Thirsty's Fan HQ Brings

The Saturday morning sun had not yet climbed high over Lubbock when the first fans began drifting toward Drive of Champions, the broad pedestrian boulevard that runs alongside Texas Tech's football stadium. They came carrying folding chairs and coolers, wearing scarlet and black, and many of them stopped short at the sight of a gleaming diner-style pop-up that had materialized on the pavement overnight. It was Thirsty's Fan HQ, Coca-Cola's traveling fan activation, and it had chosen the perfect weekend to roll into town.

The pop-up, which opened its doors Friday and returned Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., sits on Drive of Champions. For fans arriving hours before kickoff, it offers free Coca-Cola samples, Texas Tech trivia, photo opportunities, and custom Coca-Cola and Texas Tech merchandise. But the real draw on Saturday was scheduled for around 3 p.m., when Red Raider legend and two-time Super Bowl champion Danny Amendola was set to make a special appearance.

Amendola's presence was fitting. A Red Raider legend and two-time Super Bowl champion, he represents the kind of success story that Red Raider fans love to claim as their own.

The timing of the pop-up was no accident. Saturday marked the season opener for Texas Tech football at the newly renamed Galaxy Stadium.

The game against Abilene Christian was the season opener, and the atmosphere around the stadium was electric, with Thirsty's Fan HQ positioned at the center of it all.

Drive of Champions, officially known as Wes Kittley Drive of Champions, is the heart of Texas Tech's gameday experience. The street is closed to traffic three hours before each kickoff, transforming into a pedestrian thoroughfare packed with fans making their way to the stadium. It is also the route for Raider Walk. For a brand like Coca-Cola, setting up shop on that stretch of pavement means embedding itself in the most intimate ritual of Red Raider fandom.

Thirsty's Fan HQ is part of a much larger campaign. Coca-Cola's "Fan Work Is Thirsty Work" platform returned this season with a 74-stop tour across college football campuses. The campaign celebrates the idea that being a fan is itself a form of labor, the kind that leaves you hoarse and thirsty by the fourth quarter. "Football fandom is about so much more than what happens on the field," Stacy Jackson, vice president of the Coca-Cola trademark in North America, said in the campaign's announcement. "It's the traditions, rituals and energy fans bring to every game-day moment."

The Lubbock stop was one of several tied to Texas Tech's season opener. Earlier in the week, Thirsty's Fan HQ had appeared in Houston before making its way to the South Plains for the home opener. At a time when college football is increasingly dominated by corporate partnerships and digital experiences, the pop-up offers something refreshingly analog: a cold drink, a photo, a conversation with a fellow fan.

For Texas Tech fans, the weekend carried extra weight. The stadium's recent renaming added to the significance of the occasion. The presence of a national brand like Coca-Cola on Drive of Champions served as a reminder that college football's commercial evolution is now inseparable from its traditions.

By late Saturday afternoon, Thirsty's Fan HQ had become a gathering spot for fans of all ages. Children posed for photos, students tested each other on Red Raider trivia, and adults traded stories about past Red Raider victories. Amendola was scheduled to appear around 3 p.m.

The pop-up closed its doors at 6 p.m. The fans who had spent the afternoon sipping free Cokes and snapping photos filtered into the stadium, ready to add another chapter to a season that began with a new name on the stadium. For one weekend, at least, the work of being a fan had never tasted so sweet.
