Marching Season's Biggest Stage

Nearly thirty high school bands descend on Prosper's Children's Health Stadium for the Bands of America North Texas Regional, a full day of prelims and finals that traces its roots to a 1975 music-education experiment.

Marching Season's Biggest Stage

On the morning of October 10, the parking lots around Prosper ISD Children's Health Stadium will fill long before the first downbeat. Buses will roll in from across the region, equipment trucks will disgorge drumline harnesses and towering front ensembles, and by 7:30 a.m. the gates will open on a competition that has become one of the fall's most anticipated spectacles in North Texas: the Bands of America North Texas Regional Championship.

Nearly thirty high school marching bands are scheduled to take the field. Each will perform a show built around original music, choreography, props, and the kind of precision that takes months of pre-dawn rehearsals to achieve. A panel of nationally recognized music educators and marching band experts will evaluate every performance on musical and visual execution as well as general effect, the elusive quality that measures how powerfully a show lands on the audience.

The day runs in two acts. Preliminary competition begins in the morning and ends at 4:15 p.m., followed by a presentation of prelims awards at 4:30 p.m. The twelve highest-scoring bands advance to the evening finals, which begin at 7:30 p.m. after gates reopen at 6:30. By the time finals awards are presented at 10:45 p.m., one band will be named champion.

For the uninitiated, the appeal is not hard to grasp. Bands of America events are, by design, family-friendly and walk-up-friendly. All tickets are digital and the event is cashless, but spectators can buy tickets online, and still photography is permitted from general admission seats, though not at field level.

The event's host venue is itself a point of pride for the region. Children's Health Stadium opened in 2019 as a 12,000-seat facility for Prosper ISD football, and it has since become a regular stop on the Bands of America circuit. Prosper ISD is based in Prosper, Texas, and its stadium gives the regional championship a setting that rivals the sport venues where many of these students will one day perform.

What happens inside that stadium is the visible tip of a much older story. Bands of America was established in 1975 as Marching Bands of America, the creation of founder Larry McCormick, whose stated goal was to provide educational opportunities for music students nationwide. McCormick organized the first annual Summer Workshop and Festival in 1976. The organization was renamed Bands of America in 1984, and it became an independent tax-exempt entity in 1988. In 2006 it merged with the Music for All Foundation, a music education advocacy organization, becoming the flagship program of the combined nonprofit.

The competitive lineage runs deep. The first national marching championship was held in 1976, with the first fall Grand Nationals following in 1980. Today the Grand National Championships fill Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, each November. The 2026 Grand National Championships take place in Indianapolis from November 12 to 14.

That scale reflects something larger than trophies. Music for All, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit behind Bands of America, is among the country's largest and most influential music education organizations, and its events are framed less as cutthroat contests than as educational performance opportunities. Participating bands receive recorded commentary from judges and educators, and directors use the feedback to gauge their programs against a national standard.

For the students, though, the day is simpler than any of that. It is a chance to put months of work in front of a crowd, to watch what other programs have built, and to hear a score read aloud under stadium lights. The North Texas Regional is one stop on a road that, for the best bands, ends in Indianapolis. But on October 10 in Prosper, it is the whole world for a few hundred teenagers at a time, and the gates open early.
