Friends of Oakton Library Book

Every October, the meeting rooms at Oakton Library fill up with something that has nothing to do with checking out a book and everything to do with the community that built the place. For four days, the Friends of Oakton Library turn the Oakton Conference Room and Meeting Rooms 1 and 2 into a browsing hall of gently used books for all ages, along with CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, puzzles, and giftable items. The 2026 sale runs Wednesday, October 14 through Saturday, October 17, and the timing is deliberate: the winter holiday gift-giving season, as the library's own listing puts it, is just around the corner.

The doors open at 10 a.m. Wednesday through Friday and close at 5:30 p.m., with Saturday's hours running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no ticket and no admission fee. You walk in, you browse, you leave with an armload.

What makes this sale more than a rummage table is the organization behind it. The Friends of Oakton Library was founded in 2001, in response to community enthusiasm for creating a new branch. That enthusiasm was not abstract. The groundbreaking ceremony for the library was held on April 8, 2006, and the Oakton Library opened on September 29, 2007. The Friends group, an incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, exists to support and enhance library resources and services and to foster a strong connection between the library and the local community.

The building that resulted is a 17,304-square-foot facility certified with a Silver Rating under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, designed by the architecture firm PSA Dewberry. It is built around natural light, with oversized windows and a raised clerestory that give visitors views of the changing seasons and local wildlife. In 2008, the site was certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Backyard Habitat, and the Friends maintain that outdoor habitat year-round, including native and ornamental plants, birdhouses and feed, and furniture and fixtures. Outdoor seating purchased by the Friends extends the library space past its walls.

Since the library opened, the Friends have raised money through the sale of donated books, membership dues, and individual donations. Those funds have gone back into the branch and into the Fairfax County Public Library system as a whole. The group's board of directors meets at the library on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

The book sale is the group's most visible fundraiser, and it is organized with a librarian's sense of order. Fiction is alphabetized by the author's last name. Biography is grouped by category. History and military titles are arranged into eras. Food and beverage books are sorted by dietary interest, and travel books by country. The point, the Friends explain, is to help shoppers zero in on a particular title or author when time is short.

Donations for the 2026 sale were accepted until October 3, with contributors asked to leave books in good condition on the green cart beyond the lobby. Questions go to the group by email at [email protected].

There is a bit of local poetry in the setting. The Friends note that the village of Oakton takes its identity in part from a 300-year-old oak tree across Hunter Mill Road from the library. The tree, they write, has watched the area's history unfold. The books about it, and about everything else, are inside.

Oakton Library is located at 10304 Lynnhaven Place in Oakton, Virginia, 22124. The branch welcomes more than 50,000 users every year and serves as a community gathering place, offering programs for all ages, from preschool story times to book discussion groups. The book sale is one more way the building does what the community asked for when it pushed to create the branch in the first place.
