A Wyoming Cowboy Comes Home

The University of Wyoming revives its beloved pre-football-season tradition with a free concert headlined by UW alumnus and rodeo-riding country star Chancey Williams, capped by a 3D drone show over the Laramie campus.

A Wyoming Cowboy Comes Home

The University of Wyoming's Cowboy Kickoff Concert returns to the Laramie campus on Friday, September 11, 2026, after a multi-year absence, and it is bringing a homegrown son of the Cowboy State to headline the celebration. Singer-songwriter Chancey Williams, a UW alumnus and northeast Wyoming native, will take the stage on Fraternity/Sorority Mall as the centerpiece of the university's Kickoff Week, the annual run-up to the start of the fall semester and the Cowboys' home-opening football game.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and at 7 p.m. UW President Shane Reeves will address the crowd and introduce Williams to the stage. The concert is free and open to students, faculty, staff and the general public, with no registration required, and the event will be held rain or shine unless severe weather forces a cancellation. Around 9 p.m., the night is set to culminate in a 3D drone show, with animated images projected into the sky that organizers say will be visible across much of the campus. In between, attendees can wander among regional food trucks, grab refreshments, and visit a beer garden for guests 21 and older, brought to the event by the UW Alumni Association. UW student-athletes and cheerleaders are also scheduled to make guest appearances, and a shuttle service will run throughout the evening.

The concert is the revival of a tradition that once anchored the opening of every UW football season. The Cowboy Kickoff Concert was launched as a pre-season celebration ahead of the home opener and quickly became an annual fixture, with Brothers Osborne headlining the 2018 edition at the Arena-Auditorium. The event skipped a year in 2017 and then went quiet, leaving a gap that UW officials now describe as the first return since 2018. Whatever the precise count of the years away, the university is clearly eager to reclaim the ritual. "The Cowboy Kickoff Concert is the perfect opportunity to bring together the UW community, Wyoming residents and Cowboy fans from across the state as we celebrate the start of another academic year," Reeves said in announcing the lineup. "We're excited to bring back this tradition and provide an unforgettable evening of live music, community spirit and Cowboy pride as we count down to the football home opener."

The choice of headliner makes the homecoming feel especially fitting. Williams is not merely a Wyoming artist who happens to be returning to his alma mater; he is, in many ways, the living embodiment of the state's cowboy culture. A former saddle bronc rodeo competitor, he embodies a dual life — rodeo cowboy and country singer — that puts him in rarefied company. Alongside the legendary Chris LeDoux, Williams is one of only two performers ever to both compete in rodeo events and take the main stage at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Williams has shared stages with artists including Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Cody Johnson and Parker McCollum, and has performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the National Finals Rodeo.

Williams is also a product of the very institution hosting the concert. A UW alumnus, his return to the Laramie campus is something of a full-circle moment. For a university that has long leaned into its identity as the state's flagship — and for a state whose self-image is inseparable from the cowboy — having a UW-educated, rodeo-riding, Opry-performing son of Wyoming headline the revival of its signature fall tradition carries a particular resonance.

The concert is the emotional and musical centerpiece of Kickoff Week, but it is also a prelude to the main event on the field. The following day, Saturday, September 12, the Cowboys open their home schedule at War Memorial Stadium against Northern Colorado. The pairing of a Friday-night concert with a Saturday home opener is a way to welcome students back to campus and get the community fired up for Cowboy football.

That hope is finally being realized again. The 2026 edition returns to an outdoor setting on Fraternity/Sorority Mall, rather than the indoor arenas that hosted some earlier editions. Organizers have laid out a clear set of policies for the evening: no large bags, no outside food or beverages, no weapons, no flags attached to poles or sticks, no smoking or smokeless tobacco within the event area, and no animals except approved service animals. All bags are subject to search. The venue will be gated, but admission remains free, and shuttle and route details are expected to be released closer to the concert date.

For students arriving for a new semester, for alumni returning to their old stomping grounds, and for Laramie residents who have watched the tradition come and go, the evening promises a familiar kind of magic: live country music under a Wyoming sky, the smell of food trucks in the air, and the knowledge that the Pokes are about to play their first home game of the year. And when the lights dim and the drones begin to trace their glowing shapes overhead, the Cowboy Kickoff Concert will have officially reclaimed its place on the calendar — a Wyoming night, headlined by a Wyoming cowboy, welcoming the season home.
